Step by step
How working with a garden architect unfolds

A no-obligation first meeting
The first consultation is an opportunity to meet and discuss your ideas. We clarify what your dream garden should look like — we go through images, the scope of work and an indicative budget. I then send you a quotation.

Site survey
Once the quotation is accepted we arrange a visit during which I take photographs and survey the garden. Demanding terrain may require a geodetic survey. Any material you have, such as house plans, is welcome.

Concept
Based on the survey I prepare a conceptual solution accompanied by inspirational images of materials, plants and colour palettes. The concept is a rough layout of the areas and a basis for our discussion.

Design study
From your comments I create a detailed study — the layout of materials, the specific form of elements and a cost estimate. At this stage you decide whether to build yourself or with a contractor, whom I am glad to help select.

Visualisation
More complex spaces or selected corners of the garden can be drawn into a photograph or created as a spatial 3D visualisation so you can picture the result as clearly as possible.

Detailed and construction drawings
Bespoke elements such as a pergola or water feature require technical drawings. This stage also produces the setting-out and planting plan with specific plant species and quantities.

Tender documentation
I help you select a quality contractor. From the plans I prepare an itemised bill of quantities without prices, which the contractor uses to price the project. The written part also includes an aftercare plan.

Site supervision
The architect’s presence during construction ensures the work is carried out well and exactly to the design, and allows any issues to be resolved on site. This usually means 2–3 visits per week during construction.
